Are you feeling like the past is still holding you back, no matter how much time has passed? Stress, trauma, and anxiety have a way of lingering in the body and nervous system, even when your mind knows you are no longer in danger. This can feel frustrating, exhausting, and confusing. At Posterity Counseling, we specialize in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy as a way to help your system truly process what it has been holding so you can move forward with more steadiness and ease.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps the brain and nervous system reprocess distressing experiences that were never fully integrated at the time they occurred. Rather than simply talking through events, EMDR helps the brain do what it naturally knows how to do: Heal.
One way to think about this is to imagine your brain as a filing room.
Every day, you have experiences big and small. At night, while you are sleeping, your brain naturally organizes those experiences and stores them away in filing cabinets. This is how everyday memories get filed properly. Things like your five-year-old birthday party, a conversation you had at work, or what you did over the weekend get placed in the right drawer, labeled, and stored away.
But when something traumatic or highly distressing happens, the brain responds differently.
Experiences like a car accident, the death of a loved one, a medical emergency, or ongoing emotional stress can overwhelm the system. Instead of being filed neatly into the cabinet during sleep, the brain leaves those memories out. Not because it is broken, but because it is trying to protect you.
Your brain’s intention is safety. By not fully storing a traumatic memory, it is attempting to keep something overwhelming at a distance. The problem is that these unfiled memories do not disappear. They are still present in the room, without a place to go.
So when something in the present moment reminds your brain of that experience a sound, a smell, a tone of voice, a situation your body reacts as if the danger is happening right now. This is why you might feel panicked, frozen, emotionally flooded, or on edge even when you logically know you are safe.
EMDR helps the brain return to those unfiled experiences and process them in a way that allows them to finally be stored in the filing cabinet. Once they are properly integrated, they no longer trigger the same intense body response. The memory remains, but it no longer feels like a current threat.
At Posterity Counseling, EMDR is part of our broader mission: supporting lasting transformation, not quick fixes.
